Spiritual Practices for Lent
This unit includes 8 services for the five Sundays in Lent and Holy Week. In 2026, Lent begins on Ash Wednesday on February 18th and Lent I falls on February 22nd. Services for Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday are included. The focus scriptures are drawn from Luke’s gospel and include important teachings and events on the way to the cross as well as stories referencing John the Baptist and Jesus. Introductory Biblical background is included as well as notes about this season. For each service, two different spiritual practices are suggested, and introductions to each and an appendix of books and web resources are included to deepen your congregation’s experience of this Holy season.
All eight services include the focus scripture, suggested Psalms and supporting scripture, full Calls to Worship and prayers, music suggestions, and several springboard ideas for your children’s time and adult sermons. The liturgies can be used word for word or modified for your context.
